Sanctuary homecoming (OSI)

Christine August 19th, 2008

If I called this home
then I would bring you here
to see for yourself the vast prairie ending,
carried here by the wide, blue sky
and the great clear river
to the feet of the western mountains.

This should be home
I come to this place often enough
in the early spring and now – late summer
greeting the birds by name
who rest along the shore
while the water quietly travels on.

Fish jump, the crickets chant in monotone
I pause for what seems like hours suspended
in turn to wander among the fields
in the heat
of this one evening -
a culmination of the sun’s tireless
work of an August day.

What a serene pastoral poem and photo. I can really feel the heat and the pace of it in both.

I see why you call it sanctuary. Such a lovely, restful place.

A homecoming to someplace natural, sounds wonderful. My wife and I have a little lake we enjoy visiting. It’s very serene, and often lose ourselves in meditative reflection.
    Thank you for sharing this.

This poem has such a good lazy rhythm with the line breaks feeling like lake water. I would definitely join you in this place and it should be called ‘home’.

It is home, or so your heart tells you. I thoroughly enjoyed this, especially the first stanza, which is perfection!

Pick it up!
