Lake Alva

Christine August 2nd, 2008

I haven’t had much chance to catch up with all of you the last week. Between trying to squeeze adventures out of Matthew’s last days of vacation and taking care of my Mom, we simply haven’t been home much. We did spend some time at Lake Alva yesterday with our son and his friend, camping and kayaking.

Alva is a beautiful, small and slender lake near Seeley Lake. We watched Osprey diving for fish and heard loons calling near the loon’s island. Mostly it was a very peaceful paddle. During the day it’s much busier with motor boats and jet skis. I have yet to understand the hypocrisy of attempting to protect the Common Loon (there was a big sign informing people about loons being rare here in Montana anymore) from human activity and allowing jet skis and high powered motor boats on this tiny lake. It doesn’t make sense. Can we have just one quiet water lake in western Montana? Only one little lake where you can paddle without all that noise? Please?

Quietly paddling in a kayak is so much more in harmony with nature than racing around on a jet ski. I understand that some folks have a need for speed, but, like you say, it would be nice if they could do this only in certain places, so the wildlife are not disturbed.

Pick it up!
