Extra room

Christine November 10th, 2009

In between working and other things, Matthew and I have been painting and redecorating our youngest son’s bedroom.  I’m not sure many of you know that we have been empty-nesters now for a few weeks.  I suppose our kids feel like we didn’t waste any time, but the painting and remodel needed to be done much earlier; we simply had too much stuff prior.  Now that Alasdair has moved to Missoula and is working at Best Buy until he starts school, we obviously have much less  (like no more drum set) with more room to maneuver and be creative in our little house.  I had no idea where I was going with this room until after the paint job had been completed.  However, within the space of one day the idea of a reading room took form and thus our accomplishments so far.  I’m sure the room will eventually evolve into something else but with so much light it is the perfect place to hang out and read that favorite book.  A new rug helped set the ambiance.

Notice that some instruments have already nosed their way into a corner.  In our house if you have a corner – you will find an instrument.  Here is my little guitar from Quebec and the new, Baritone Ukulele which Matthew actually has played a lot.  I’m still learning basic chords while he is playing Ukulele Jazz.  We hope to post an MP3 file of Uke and Viola here sometime soon.

And, this photo is evidence that indeed we do intend to also read in here… my own, made-to-fit Amish rocker, with the not so Amish Port accompanying. ( Amish Port, now that would be exceptionally odd.)   Next all we need are some nice plants and a bit of art on the walls. I love freshly painted walls.   Don’t worry, we still have two whole rooms left for visitors and music making!  But those rooms are another project.

Christine, we have been empty nesters for awhile ourselves now, and we quite like it, but don’t be surprised when they come back a few times before leaving for good!

I did not know you guys were musicians! Love to hear a bit of that!

Looks good, I do like the rug. That chair is Amish? One of our friends just got one in memory of her grandmother who had one like. She is French Canadian, as was her grandmother. I assumed the chair was from Canada. I’ll bet she doesn’t know it is Amish, either.

I agree with Kathie. The boys aren’t completely gone until they have bought homes. And then sometimes…

My parents took out one of my bedroom walls and turned the room into a den!

A marvelous fit for the room. No room is complete without some music or musical instruments. You will have some good reading time here no doubt. I will be anxious to hear your recording.

Like the rug and love the rocker. Looks so comfy for reading beside a good port. There’s something very special about a freshly painted room. Hope you saved a bed for when they return.

your new reading room looks fantastic. we plan to make MyKiah’s room an exercise room because of all the equipment i have gathered through the years. i look forward to hearing your mp3. hope all is well. have a great day.

I back commented where I could. For some reason some of your posts wouldn’t let a comment box appear. Love those old church photos especially the one of the outside. Have a great day.

Hi Christine, The red fabric of the cushion on your wicker chair is the same fabric as I have on my favorite overstuffed reading chair. (It goes well with the pattern in your beautiful rug.) I could be comfortable relaxing in the new Reading Room – perhaps with a nice glass of Cabernet, though…

It all looks so comfy already! I hope that you will take some photos when you have some art and other stuff in there. Happy reading Christine! (-:
