Thank you, Senator Tester
Christine June 16th, 2007
“Dear Christine:
Thank you for contacting me with your concerns about the right to petition for a writ of habeas corpus. This right is often the last line of defense protecting a detainee from unlawful imprisonment. As the greatest nation on earth, we must pride ourselves on following the principles of liberty that have been with us since our founding and therefore must carefully weigh any proposal to suspend this right.
At this critical time in our history, I believe Congress should closely examine how the Military Commissions Act of 2006 affects our guiding principles. Ensuring humane treatment and basic rights of detainees in this country will serve as protection for our troops if they are captured abroad and declared “enemy combatants.” I look forward to reviewing legislative proposals to make sure that detainees who are dangerous to our nation are prosecuted to the fullest extent of our laws while those who are unlawfully detained are returned to their normal lives expeditiously.
Torture is immoral, inhumane, and illegal. I’ve always believed in leading by example. We, as a nation, must ensure that the example we set for the world meets the highest moral, ethical and legal standards. I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts with me about this important issue, and hope that you contact me in the future if I can be of further assistance.
Sincerely,
Jon Tester
United States Senator, Montana”
