Lake Song
Christine May 4th, 2009
These two photos were taken from Big Arm Bay on the Lake looking toward the Mission Mountains late Saturday afternoon. We were just taking the canoe out of the water when I watched a young Osprey practice its hunting skills. It dove several times wings folded, plunging like a torpedo into the lake. The bird did catch a fish but dropped it. I am sure the maneuver is quite complicated and requires much skill. It was very fun watching him or her shake the cold water off its feathers while in mid-flight as it circled back over the lake to see if he could retrieve the dropped lunch. You could almost hear him say: Holy ….. that’s cold!

I saw a pair of ospreys today, too! Three of my friends and I lunched out, then walked the trails at Wolf Neck state park in Freeport. There is a small island just offshore with a pair of nesting ospreys. I will post photos tomorrow, too late this evening.
We didn’t see any hunting going on while we were there. Those are really neat shots you got of your bird. Was it cold out on the water? I keep thinking of that snow shot a few days ago.
And I bet fish are slippery even WITH talons!
But, maybe just maybe, the fish are still a little sluggish!

Great shots, Christine. It’s always ‘practice, practice, practice’ even when you’re a natural at something (like catching fish from the air!)
spectacular images, Christine!
Stunning pictures. Big Arm Bay stretches her arms wide, doesn’t she? It must have been frustrating for that Osprey to lose its lunch. Maybe it had better luck in the late evening.
